If you smell gas, act straight away. It takes a minute and could save lives.
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It’s free and open 24/7.
- Turn off the gas at the meter (the lever on the pipe, turned so it sits across the pipe).
- Open doors and windows to ventilate.
- Don’t use electrical switches, naked flames or anything that could make a spark. That includes doorbells and light switches.
- Get everyone out and wait outside for the emergency engineer.
The emergency service will make the supply safe. They don’t repair appliances, so once they’ve been, call a Gas Safe registered engineer (like us) to find and fix the cause.
Carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide has no smell. Headaches, dizziness, nausea and tiredness that improve when you leave the house can be signs of CO poisoning. Fit an audible CO alarm near every gas appliance and have your boiler serviced every year.
